Being a Familia Amiga in Uruguay means temporarily taking in a child or teenager who cannot remain with their family of origin, until they return or a permanent family solution is defined. Families are assessed, trained and supported; being ready to respond to an emergency — with first aid and CPR — is part of responsible care.

In Uruguay, the Programa de Acogimiento Familiar (Familia Amiga) is a national initiative of the Instituto del Niño y Adolescente del Uruguay (INAU), with its own Reglamento de Acogimiento Familiar. Families submit documentation — including a valid health card for household members — go through assessment and selection by the technical team, and are trained and supported. No rule has been identified that expressly requires a first-aid certificate, but current first-aid and CPR training is commonly expected for the daily care of a minor.

Support and supervision are handled by the INAU technical team. A first-aid and CPR certificate is in addition to — not a replacement for — the suitability assessment and the caregiving abilities required, and it should be kept current.
